Notes: Gas Stress [8/8/2026]

Stomach gas happens when you swallow air or your gut breaks down certain foods. You can reduce discomfort by eating slowly, avoiding fizzy drinks, and taking short walks after meals. Most gas is harmless, but simple habits and diet choices can prevent a buildup.

Gas in the body is not produced by an organ itself. Instead, it comes from two main sources: air you swallow into your stomach and the breakdown of food by bacteria living in your large intestine (colon).

You pass more gas as you get older because your metabolism slows down, your digestive muscles lose strength, and your body produces fewer digestive enzymes. Food stays in your system longer, giving bacteria more time to create gas.

Common Causes

  • Swallowed air: Eating too fast, chewing gum, or drinking through a straw.
  • Food breakdown: Eating beans, broccoli, dairy, or artificial sweeteners.
  • Slow digestion: Lack of movement or mild constipation.
  • Slower digestion: Your body moves food slower, which lets bacteria make more gas.
  • Weaker muscles: The muscles in your gut and pelvic floor lose strength over time.
  • Less acid and enzymes: Your stomach makes less acid, and your body makes less lactase, making dairy and certain foods harder to break down.

Quick Relief Tips

  • Walk around: Light movement helps move trapped gas along.
  • Drink water: Staying hydrated keeps your digestion regular.
  • Over-the-counter aids: Simethicone or activated charcoal products can break up gas bubbles.
